what do you think of israeli sources (ie, the times of israel) supposedly coming forward to report that the original death toll (70,000+) from the gazan health ministry (hamas) is actually accurate? i have been seeing mainstream, western media outlets reporting this everywhere… stating that israel is now conceding to the ministry’s numbers, that their figures were always legitimate, and over 70k civilians + combatants truly have died during the war
Their figures are not “legitimate”. They do not distinguish between civilian deaths and terrorist deaths. Nor between those murdered by Hamas or killed by misfired rockets from Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and the collateral deaths resulting from Israelis strikes on Hamas targets.
Remember that civilian deaths are the goal for Hamas: provoke a response from Israel by invading and committing the most barbarous acts of violence, then hide among civilians, out of uniform, at times wearing PRESS vests, as Israel responds in order to claim “Genocide”, a claim which was made from October 8th onwards, when Israel was still dealing with the invaders let alone had mounted a response.
Civilian deaths in any war are appalling and to be regretted, but let’s not forget that they are the outcome sought by Hamas.
Self-censorship aka preference falsification is one of the most damaging forces in the world today, and academia is not immune. We must continue encouraging people to speak up and share the truth as they see it, on any and all topics, or the vocal and often most radical minority of voices will dominate society. Most importantly, we must speak out against those who are egregiously violating our most sacred moral TABOOS, expressing overt bigotry, dehumanization, and calls for violence. Violators must be punished with strict social consequences, so their hate does not become normalized.
Strong breakdown of pluralistic ignorance in academia. That observation about people staying silent because they think theyre alone in dissent really captures how manufactured consensus works. I've seen similar patterns in other institutional settings where the loudest fringe becomes mistaken for majority opinion, basically creating feedback loops nobody wanted but everyone reinforces.

Very interesting.
Interesting as always. PS: Maarten Boudry is Belgian, not Dutch.
