Bibi is doing what financial analysts call “derisking,” reducing dependency on the USA as a military partner with a nine year calendar to phase it out completely — while maintaining the relationship to the most advantageous degree possible in the mean time.
Isn’t the simplest explanation for the delay in dealing with Iran is that not all of the logistics underpinning an attack are yet in place? The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike force has only recently entered the potential area of conflict but tankers, surveillance planes and appropriate levels of munitions are still being sorted out as far as I can tell.
Iran understands that their time is running out. What the West continues not to process is the mindset of those in the highest echelons of the Iranian regime who are Shi’a Twelthers and who see conflict and chaos are prerequisites to advancing the return of the Occluded Mahdi and the onset of Islamic End Times - when, of course, Jews will be exterminated.
There are many things we don’t know, including the number of Iranian decision makers who will push back on Iran’s apparently suicidal course (which, if it is to happen at all, will occur only after hostilities begin). But if the example of Iran’s proxies leaders are anything to go by, I would hold out much hope.
Whatever happens to the Iranian people, one thing is certain. Should disaster strike, President Trump and Israel - not Ayatollah Khameini and his IRGC and Basij goons - will be held responsible (and not necessarily in that order).
