Thanks for linking Amit’s piece, Claire. The situation in the Persian Gulf is at fever-pitch; I haven’t ever been so anxious and excited at the time with respect to potential regime change. I sense that a US-led surgical strike is imminent, specifically to “terminate [Khameini] with extreme prejudice,” as the Vietnam-era idiom has it. What will then happen I don’t know; I don’t think anyone does. But I do not fear any serious reprisals or counter-attacks from the IRGC; instead, continued mass slaughter of Iranian youth.
So much depends on what “assets” the Iranian people, the Pahlavians, and their supporters have available to dismantle, neutralize, and/or turn Basij and IRGC soldiers. What’s additionally so damn frustrating is that Trump (who likely never has any plan beyond 72 hours from the present) has not attempted to explain any of this to the American people (of course at least half of whom loathe him, and for good reason), but instead persists with these sickening ICE raids, where reckless, misguided (legally innocent) US citizens get themselves killed.
