Aww, that's too bad. I mean, the US needs *someone* to negotiate with when erecting the new, massive toll booth on the Gulf.

Someone representing Iranian government needs to sign the agreement: Iran gives US a 99-year lease on Kharg, in exchange for secure (unsanctioned) oil revenue, with understanding that the spigot will turn off if the government does not comply on nukes, terrorism, whatever.

This seems a much better solution than plunging the country into a fragmented chaos that will remain the source of random international terror attacks indefinitely.

Hopefully the next batch of targets, err, leaders will be practical and open to such negotiation.
